A lookout. An exhibition in the framework of  AKTUELLE KUNST IN GRAZ

Works by Anke Armandi, Gudrun Fürlinger,  Kathrin Lorenz, Duo Plank-Poschauko, Marlene Schröder, Ludwig Wüst

Opening: Kunsthistorikerin Gréta Mikos, MA, BA

The artists are invited to deal with the topic of the “next generation”, to show real and desired living environments, to point out the needs and rights of the new inhabitants of the earth and, at the same time, to question the living conditions, expectations, duties and values of the adults of our generation.
From their point of view, the artists are to use their artistic means to clarify the significance of this new life to be protected, starting from intimate confrontations to global questions, and to make people aware of the devastating consequences of a negligent, loveless, uneducated upbringing by incompetent parents and adults in the educational process, by a society that distances itself from problems as much as possible, that insists above all on the law and shirks its duties, not only for themselves but also for the whole of humanity, the world around us, the planet.
If an empathy-less culture of incomprehension aims at the egoistic exploitation of self-indulgent actions and experiences, people will continue to be invaded, subjugated, mistreated, animals tortured, plants poisoned and wiped out, all habitat destroyed.
It is time to build up the appropriate competence for a reasonable life in the future.
Inspired by Bela Tarr’s production “Missing people”, a project about 200 homeless people at the Vienna Festival in the Museumsquartier, Ludwig Wüst, Anke Armandi and Gudrun Fürlinger have explored the area of the former Nordbahnhof in countless walks over the last three years and approached the urban transformation with different artistic approaches.
Filmmaker Ludwig Wüst has the protagonists of his new film “3.30 p.m.”, who meet again after many years, review their past there, as if the walk and the conversation of the two in the area undergoing change were a metaphor for inexorable transience.
Anke Armandi works with similar motifs on location and shows a series of large-format pictures that tell of the disappearance of refuges and rigorous destruction of nature. She deliberately chooses the traditional art-historical form of the triptych for her series.
Gudrun Fürlinger explores the “Wasteland” with her camera, which changes its face almost daily. Through the lens, on different days, she observes a place where a tattered foam mattress has been lying for some time. It is surrounded by wildly growing vegetation and rubbish and looks different every time she visits it. Someone seems to be using it …

With the camera I explore a supposed sleeping place in the Wasteland in front of the panorama of the emerging Smart City in Vienna. The filmed scenes are then projected onto my body in my flat. The world and its condition is always in relation to my individuality. I cannot relinquish my responsibility for the world, even if I want to …

Regular familiarity gives children security. When they feel safe, they develop self-confidence, courage and curiosity. Discovering the world around them is a basic prerequisite for understanding relationships.

Claudia Plank & Hans Werner Poschauko
Born in 1969 and 1963. Studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with Maria Lassnig and Ernst Caramelle. Afterwards postgraduate studies at the Jan van Eyck Academie Maastricht with Guillaume Bijl, Mona Hatoum, Jimmie Durham and Jean Fisher.
The Vienna-based artists work in such diverse media as installation, performance, video, painting and sculpture and have created numerous works in public space. They see themselves as representatives of a contemporary romanticism: many of their works are directed against the destruction of nature and culture by the consumer society. Their discomfort with the ordinary seeks ways out through a particularly intense experience of reality. The wonder, the mysteriousness of our world is the theme of her artistic work.

Craft, technique and pictorial language, with their well-designed composition, enable the artistic statement and special charisma of the light-flooded objects to be heightened and to make them appear alive.
The fascination of the interplay of colour, light, transmitted light and shadow has been brought to the material glass by the trained ceramist Marlene Schröder. She is captivated by the charm of ever new ways of working and combinations derived from the glazing technique of ceramics. Transparent glass overlays in particular give the impression of spatial depth.

In the Fusing firing, different firing curves can produce both smoothly fused glass images and relief-like objects.

Thematically, her objects are influenced by nature, technology or even social aspects, sometimes completely abstract.

Marlene Schröder MARE NOSTRUM

Marlene Schröder presents her works either spaced on mostly white-glazed wooden panels or free-standing in iron frames. In this way, LIGHT, SHADOW and THROUGH LIGHT can further enhance the effect of the picture and lead to a three-dimensional pictorial object. The examination of water plays the essential role here. For how will the next generations find our seas? Or how will everyone have access to drinkable water?

Again and again, film and theatre director Ludwig Wüst returns to the theme of home, a circling around an idea that has nothing idyllic about it. The tour guide here is the indefatigable Martin, a penniless actor who meets his friend Anthony again after 15 years. As the man with the camera, Anthony records the film images between Vienna’s large construction site and Prater beer until, with his hidden lens, the perspective of the narrative also moves on. Horrors of a childhood emerge and never leave the film, which seeks traces of the past in the present, which ultimately gives it its title. (Robert Weixlbaumer)

Gréta Mikos, MA, BA studied art history at Karl Franzens University Graz, gained experience as a research assistant to the director at the Zentrum für GegenwartsKunst in Graz and is currently a doctoral candidate.
