AUSTRIA IS READING: Friederike Schwab

Friederike Schwab

In the Women Empowerment series Friederike Schwab is reading from “Nora. ein Tanz”, Keiper, 2021 and “Luftglück und Knisterpapier”, Löcker Verlag, 2019

Friederike Schwab was born on 30.12.1941 as the daughter of a head waiter and a housewife. Her desire to become a painter was already noticed in her school years, as she was constantly drawing. At the Graz School of Arts and Crafts she found the training she wanted in the department of decorative painting. Prof. Wolf, Prof. Brunner and Prof. Felfer were her teachers from 1954-1960. Already during these years she began to write, but did not take it too seriously. When she began to write the first cycles of poems, she found a solicitous supporter in Jeannie Ebner, who worked for the magazine Literatur und Kritik, and the first publications, which were soon followed by many stories in Orf Steiermark. Literature and painting practically coexisted and became the main interest of the artist, who presented her paintings in many exhibitions. Nevertheless, it took many years before she found a peaceful blending of the two mediums. In Letters to van Gogh, she managed to coexist for the first time, writing about painting and then painting a large series of portraits of poets.
