Musician lecture: Meretrio – Welcome Spring

MERETRIO Emiliano Sampaio - Guitar/Trombone, Gustavo Boni - Bass, Luis Andre - Drums/Percussion

The Meretrio was brought together in São Paulo – Brasil, in 2004, as an initiative of Emiliano Sampaio (guitar and trombone), Gustavo Boni (acoustic and electric bass), and Luis André (drums and percussion), with the purpose of researching the diversity of popular music.

Meretrio played in important European and Brazilian Jazz festivals such as Bayerisches Jazz Weekend, Fête de la Musique, Jazz´n More, Mikulassky Jazz Festival, SESC Sao Paulo, Jazz Na Fábrica, and in the famous concert halls Porgy & Bess in Vienna and Sendesaal in Bremen.

In 2014 moved from Brazil to Austria and invited six horn players to record the album Mereneu Project as a nonet, which won the “Downbeat Student Award” for Best 2014 Jazz Group. In 2015 Meretrio released the ambitious album “Tourists” with Big Band instrumentation, which won prizes from the “Downbeat” magazine and a composition prize at the Graz Jazz Composition Contest.

In 2017 Meretrio released the album Óbvio featuring the saxophonist Heinrich Von Kalnein (Jazz Big Band Graz) in two tracks.

Now in 2018 Meretrio recorded a new project asking the question: would it be possible to mix trombone, guitar and electronics in a way that the music is also playable in live situations? This was Meretrio´s main motivation to compose several compositions exploring different colors than the traditional jazz trio Guitar, Bass and Drums. With the help of digital effects and loop machine, we can combine lines and harmonies from all instruments in real time, creating new textures and musical possibilities.

In the dialogue between the trios of the past and present, it is evident that the Meretrio keeps always developing their music, never leaving behind a sense of humour, creativity and the joy of making music.
