FROM PARIS Irma Servatius (viola, text, A) & Bruno Tran Ba Loc (electronics, F)
Irma’s texts and sounds from her viola are transformed live using Bruno’s modular system* to create new sonic landscapes. The viola and the spoken voice undergo distortion, alienation, and multifaceted processing until the boundaries of music dissolve for the listener, creating the feeling of being oneself part of the instrument.
* Modular synthesizers are electronic musical instruments composed of separate synthesizer modules that represent different functions. The modules can be connected together by the user to create a patch. The outputs from the modules may include audio signals, analog control voltages, or digital signals for logic or timing conditions. A modular synth is made up of individual modules which are combined into an instrument. (from Wikipedia)
Bruno Tran Ba Loc was born in 1976 in Paris and began playing the piano at the age of six. Since 2000, he has worked as a composer, and since 2002 as an electronic artist and modular sound designer. He composes piano music as well as works for small ensembles for various institutions and contexts, including fashion events in Russia and music academies. He currently collaborates in the field of electronic music with the French singers Colette Cendre and Missonne, as well as with the Austrian string quintet United Intonations. Since 2003, he has maintained a close collaboration—characterized by recordings and a personal connection—with the Stockhausen Network & Community.
He also pursues ongoing experimental projects, creating music inspired by the sculptures of Berit Hildre and Sabrina Gruss.
Irma Servatius, from Graz, grew up in Boston, USA. She studied viola at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, where she earned her Master’s degree in 2006. Since 2015, she has lived in Graz and works freelance as a violist and artist, as well as part-time as an assistant at kunstGarten. She also writes for Wikipedia, focusing on lesser-known female composers. This focus is reflected in our concert series “Women Play Music by Women,” in which she performs as a violist and composer. Her other musical interests include historical violin performance (Baroque music), folk music from as many countries as possible, and, most recently, Appalachian fiddle music for Contra Dance in Graz.
