For the upcoming International Women’s Day, there will be “Literature & Film” with Irmi Horn in the kunstGarten.

In our kunstGarten series Women Empowerment, we once again take a look at the living conditions of women. A little look at the Equal Pay Day in Austria: the day from which women statistically work for free until the end of the year took place on 30 October 2022. This shows that the gender pay gap, the difference in income between women and men, still exists.

Irmi Horn has chosen a book that is particularly valuable when looking at the events of 2022 in the US, where the history of abortion and pregnancy divides the population. This situation also affects women in Europe,  all over the world.

In her book “The Event”, Annie Ernaux has put a student in front of this tough decision.

This “female Proust” is being printed in German by Suhrkamp Verlag.

Sonja Finck, born in 1978 in Moers, studied literary translation in Düsseldorf and is the translator. She now lives as a literary translator in Berlin and Gatineau (Canada).  She received the Eugen Helmlé Translator’s Prize in 2019.

Annie Thérèse Blanche Ernaux, née Duchesne (* 1 September 1940 in Lillebonne, Seine-Maritime), is a French writer. Her literary work is essentially autobiographical. She has repeatedly addressed her own life from working-class child to author. She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2022.

Meike Feßmann, a German literary critic, author and journalist, described Annie Ernaux as an “outstanding writer” in the Süddeutsche Zeitung. In addition to Marcel Proust and Virginia Woolf, Feßmann also names the sociologists Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu as well as Roland Barthes as role models for this “independent” work.
